real world housewarming.

My induction to the 'real world' is a year overdue, since I graduated from Holy Cross in 2006, but it's taken a year for me to get myself together. (Not that I could be considered 'together', but whatevs).

Everyone is having housewarmings. Cause after all, we're all 23/24 yrs old, so lets all buy houses. Oh except me, cause I live at home with my parents, cause I can't afford to buy a condo. Now, I'm sure if I racked up my credit card, I could afford it, but I am not one of those people who spends money they don't have. I have no credit card debt, never have & never will. I have a great job, at a great company that allows me to work from home each day. Super right?

Except that home I work from is my parents' home.

Despite their insistance that its 'my home too', I want my own place. I am sick of having to watch certain TV shows and work in certain rooms to avoid disturbing my grandmother [I love her to death, but sheesh]. I want to wake up, make my own breakfast, in my own kitchen, clean my own clothes [I'm not allowed to do my own laundry because my mother feels that I will screw it up, and yells at me when I offer to iron], buy my own decorations, etc.

I have recently become a little bit of a real estate conoisseur, especially in Worcester. Yeah, not exactly a hot market, but there are some nice areas, and its cheap & convenient. Although, it seems, not cheap enough for my entry-level salary.

Places I have researched:

Fremont Lofts- I went to tour their model and fell in luuurve. The price at the time was very high, so I dismissed it. Then they began to lower the prices. It was when they tried to auction off the lofts that I became suspicious. If they were so great people would be clamouring to own them, right? Then I stumbled upon a blog by 'i heart peanut butter'. A young professional woman dealing with her own real estate woes in Worcester. Hallelujah! I read what she said about the Fremont, asked friends who lived in the area for advice, and determined it may not be the best place.

University Park Lofts- Looks like a huge box, prices selling way too high for the square footage, and not in the greatest neighborhood, either. But it has views of my darling Holy Cross. I could pretend to re-live my glory days while relxing in my concrete box-ish loft. Cute.

Biscuit Lofts- Best location by far. Only one loft selling that I know of, cause they are very popular [right off Shrewsbury St.]. I would love to live there, but the price for a 2 bed/2 bath 1200 sf. loft was $250,000. Yeaaaah, not so much.

Kettle Brook Lofts- Weird ass location. Almost on the Leicester line, kind of ghetto fab. Near Webster Square. Possiblity of getting mugged: High/Very High. No thanks.

Blackstone Lofts- Not sure yet, they don't have models open yet I don't think. Its near Kelly Sq. which could make for an interesting commute. The prices are a little high considering the horrible market.

If anyone lives in any of these complexes, or has advice, pleeease leave a comment & let me know :)

I replied back on my blog.. About kettle Brook area, we lived about 500 feet from there...Quiet area and the safest out of all the other locations of lofts.

I also suggest people rent there own apartment BY THEMSELVES for at least a couple years before buying. SO MUCH MORE AGONY in making a bad decision on a house versus an apartment. Also I suggest moving around and looking in places you wouldn't think too if only for knowing that where you want to buy is where you really want to be.
I have lived in 12 states and moved alot I know I like Worcester.
And not everyone has to buy. We bought so in a few years we could sell (5-6 years) and move with that money in AZ. BUt with the market the way it is expect to stay in a home you buy for at least 5 years in order to have equity in your home. Nothing worse then selling and breaking even

Hey Miss J,

So I'm looking to rent from someone in the Fremont lofts but your comments on it have made me wary. What did your friends have to say about it that made you decide it wasn't the best place?

Thanks in advance,
Andy
